Fruitstronomy Progress

FRUITS/PLANETS

First I cropped out the fruit/planets out of the original image, then pasted it onto the canvas. I drew in the shadows of the fruits using the brush tool with the brush size at about 1000 px. I also changed the colour of the fruits/planets to a red using hue/saturation and adjusting the hue.

BACKGROUND [WATER DROP]

I inverted the colour of the whole image so that it becomes a dark image, and adjusted the colour to create the red water reflections.

eg. Neptune.

AFTER:

This project took a completely different turn to what I originally planned [I wanted to create a FULL COLOUR image rather than a monotone one] but I guess it didn’t turn out too bad. Also I wanted the planets to be floating in space with a starry background but ended up showing the objects submerged into the water…not sure how that idea came about.

Anyway this project was quite fun, and would’ve been better if I knew how to create shadows based on the shapes of the original objects, rather than having to draw them in to create the desired effect.

POCKY: THE SUPER SNACK!

Finally, I’ll be spamming a few of the images I’ve used so far for reference. The processes showing how they were used will be listed in the ‘POCKY PROCESSES’ entry.

Progress

I’ve chosen to stick with the ‘phases of the moon’ to go with the quote

I didn’t give myself much time for this exercise as expected.

Here are the two images I used…

I quickly cropped out the sky from the image of the mountain so it looks like this:

Cropped mountains

The cropped image was then pasted and arranged on the DL-sized artboard. I then applied a black background behind the mountains and applied a canvas texture filter for the whole image.

With the image of the moon, I cropped out chosen phases to put into the design. I applied the same texture effect as I did with the background, and pasted them individually onto the DL artboard.

After arranging the moon phases onto the artboard, I added in the quote using the ‘Horizontal Type Mask Tool’ on top of the moon images. But for the word ‘change’ and ‘Andy Warhol’ I used the normal ‘Horizontal Type Tool’.

The end result?

COMPLETE!

COMPLETE!

Looking back, it doesn’t really resemble any of the Dada/Pop art images in the inspiration post…

Dada/Pop Art inspiration

Collecting a couple of images to help keep me on-topic for the theme.

The quote:

“Isn’t life a series of images that change as they repeat themselves?”

I haven’t made up my mind about the theme yet, but it will most likely have something to do with outer space, phases of the moon, etc.

Chess Poster – Epilogue

I was quite happy with my chess poster, I decided to take it further:

To make it my desktop wallpaper for my Eee PC.

I found a tutorial to crop the artwork to the artboard… [after it was due]…
http://www.bittbox.com/illustrator/requested-tutorial-crop-excess-illustrator-artwork/

The end result?

Resolution: 1024 x 600

Resolution: 1024 x 600

The quote says: “Life is a kind of Chess, with struggle, competition, good and ill events” – Benjamin Franklin. I thought it complimented the arrangement of the pieces in the scene; it’s as though they’re at war.

That’s it for this exercise.

Chess Poster… COMPLETED!

After creating the chess pieces, I’ve decided to add a scene to arrange them on to. To keep the design simple, I’ve decided a simple scene with a line of grass and a hill. The white pieces are hiding in the grass waiting for battle, while the black pieces stand on top of the hill. Both in the moonlight.

End result, though badly cropped.

End result, though badly cropped.

I am aware that my file submission for assessment does not look exactly like this. The submission had the uncropped oval shape of the hill, in other words it goes WAY beyond the artboard lines.

I noticed that the placement of the moon is incorrect, since it’s placed on the opposite side of where the shine/lighter side of the pieces are.

But I’m finished with this exercise.

Chess Poster

Originally I had hoped I was able to create a chess set based on delicious cakes, inspired by the image below…

EXILE Magazine Issue 1, August 2008 [Japanese fashion magazine]

EXILE Magazine Issue 1, August 2008 [Japanese fashion magazine

However after playing around with Illustrator at home, I only managed to create something as simple-looking as this:

Random chess piece I made using Illustrator

I then decided to simplify my theme to MUSHROOMS.

First Mushroom

First Mushroom

As for the layout of the poster, I might place the pieces in order on the chessboard, and include some grassy areas…

‘Til next time.
